You Straightened Your Hair How?
The quest for beautiful straight hair has been going for centuries.
Some practices are still going strong while others did not prove so
successful. Checking out the humble beginnings of straightening hair
leaves you with a bit more knowledge on how to create a healthy look
without breaking the bank nor sacrificing comfort for a look that is due
to change in the next year or so. When it comes to your hair the less
complicated and the more natural route keeps it in its zone, ready to
take on any look you can think of.
Press your Hair
This takes 2 people, but back in the day, everyone had someone
willing to help with achieving the look, if for no other reason, than to
be able to say “I ironed her hair!” Yes, that does mean literally! Below
are the actual steps, so grab the ironing board and the iron, ignoring
the strange looks you are getting, and study the steps below.
- You will want to begin with a milk rinse. Pour 1/3 cup of milk
into a clean spray bottle and apply to dry hair. Saturate with
spray, and then allow to remain for at least one half hour. Milk is
a natural hair straightener and conditioner.
- Shampoo and condition as usual. Allow to dry naturally, if time
will allow. If not, blow dry on a warm setting and then end with a
cold setting. Be certain hair is dry and then let it rest 5 to 10
minutes.
- To iron hair with a clothes iron, have your partner ready to go.
Set up the ironing board and put the iron on low heat. No steam so
be sure to turn that setting off, or better yet, use an older iron
that does not offer steam. Any good thrift store hunt should produce
a great older model iron.
- Kneel so the top of your head is even with the ironing board.
The board is adjustable so if you are not familiar with the board
look underneath and adjust accordingly. Your partner will then comb
out a section of your hair over the board. Working through the hair
to be certain it is tangle free.
- Next, with the comb in one hand and the iron in the other, your
partner will comb through the section in one sweep, followed by the
iron. (Have your partner check the heat to be sure it is safe.) Only
once on each section is necessary. This will give you a structure of
straightness like you have not seen before.
- Continue with each section of hair until totally done.
A few pointers to consider are:
- Never hold iron motionless on the hair. Moving always in a clean
sweep should only take a couple of seconds; it’s a smooth fast sweep
that creates the straightness as in pressing your clothes.
- Do not skip the milk conditioning treatment. It helps to create
a barrier between your hair and the heat while providing additional
protection.
